The day’s closest finishes came in the two under-17 200m races. Whilst swirling winds continually troubled the middle distance runners, strong tailwinds aided the sprint events towards fast times and exciting finishes.Īlex Boyce of Liverpool Harriers completed an impressive double in the senior men’s 200m and 400m with encouraging times of 21.84 seconds and 48.03 seconds respectively. Liverpool Pembroke and Sefton’s Rosie Johnson narrowly defeated Sophie Brennan of Liverpool Harriers, their respective times of 4:48.59 and 4:50.79 placing them 10th and 16th in the United Kingdom rankings. One of the strongest events of the day was the under-15 girl’s 1500m. The under-20 Liverpool Harrier smashed her 3000m personal best and also ran 5:04.27 in the 1500m to take the Merseyside title for both events. Katherine Walker was another double champion over the middle distance events. His time of 1:52.65 gave him a seven-second gap in the 800m before he was able to cruise around to a comfortable 18-second victory in the 1500m. Southport’s James Tartt dominated the middle distance events with imperious victories in both the senior men’s 800m and 1500m. The recent England international made light work of the competition he won the hammer by nearly 23 metres and the discus by a margin of over five metres. Michael Bomba was a double champion with victory in the senior men’s discus thanks to a throw of 41 metres and 13 centimetres and a championship record of 67.55m in his favoured hammer event. THE Merseyside Athletics Championships took place at Wavertree last Saturday.Īlthough there may have been a decline in standards over recent years, certain performances stood out and defied the trend.
